Mikuni Port has been a thriving harbor since the Edo period, playing a particularly important role as a stop for the Kitamae-bune ships. The Kitamae-bune were merchant vessels that transported goods along the Sea of Japan coast from the Edo period to the Meiji period, and Mikuni Port was one of the major ports among them. 
- From this port, many merchants engaged in trade with various parts of Japan, with a lively exchange particularly of rice, sake, seafood, and marine products.
At Mikuni Port, there is a museum called "Kitamai Shipowner's House - Ukon Family," which conveys the history related to the Kitamai ships. Visitors can learn about the history and culture of the merchant ships from that era. The museum showcases the background of how Mikuni Port thrived due to the Kitamai ships and the stories of the merchants who contributed to the development of the region, making it an unmissable spot for history enthusiasts.
Mikuniko Port is also famous as a fishing hub, with a plentiful catch of seafood. Particularly in winter, it is well-known for the landing of "Echizen crabs" (snow crabs from Fukui). The Echizen crabs caught at Mikuniko Port are highly regarded nationwide for their freshness and rich flavor.
