Approaching the charm of Kuramadera, a natural power spot in Kurama-Honmachi

Standing in the prestigious mountainous sacred place of Kyoto

Kuramadera is an ancient temple located on the mid-slope of Mount Kurama in the northwest of Kyoto. The precincts, enveloped in deep forests, are filled with a mystical atmosphere as if time has stood still. The main hall's Kondo is designated as a national treasure and continues to captivate visitors along with the rich nature.

Fusion of tradition and power spots

The triangular pattern in front of the main hall is known as a power spot of this area. It is said that one can experience the energy of the universe and visitors are said to open their arms wide to bathe in that power. On the other hand, the guardian dogs (komainu) of Kuramadera are tigers, which tells a story of its venerable history. It is a mysterious space where tradition and mystery coexist.

Enjoy a leisurely stroll amid the rich nature

As you proceed along the approach, there are attractions scattered throughout the densely wooded area, such as the Taho-to and Okunoin. While it is convenient to use the cable car for transportation, it is recommended to walk from the mountain gate if you want to enjoy a leisurely stroll. You will be able to leisurely savor nature while feeling the pleasant breeze.

Access and attractions information

It is convenient to go to Kuramadera by city bus. There are also historical and romantic places of interest such as Kifune Shrine and the former residence of Iwakura Nogi in the vicinity, so it may be nice to enjoy detours.

Kuramadera, standing in the depths of Kyoto, seems like the entrance to a different world where the charm of rich nature and power spots are combined. Wrapped in an atmosphere of tradition and mystery, why not take your time and enjoy a leisurely stroll?

There were many foreign visitors, probably because they knew about ``Kurama no Tengu'' (lol). In front of the main shrine, mysterious patterns were drawn on the floor, and everyone seemed to sense that it was a power spot, regardless of their nationality. The fact that the guardian dogs at Kurama-dera Temple are not dogs but tigers adds to the atmosphere, and the tiger stone on the left side creates an even deeper effect. We continued on to Kurama-dera Okunoin and Kifune, but I think you can have plenty of fun just by visiting Kurama-dera Honden Kondo.

I visited on August 4th. I walked from the Sanmon gate to the main hall. There was a breeze in the rich nature, and it was very cool and pleasant. Parking right next to the Sanmon entrance of Kurama Temple was conveniently priced at 500 yen per day.

Since there was a cable, it was easier to visit the shrine than I expected.

After visiting Kifune Shrine, I entered the mountain from the west gate with the intention of visiting Kurama Temple, but ended up doing a light hike. lol On the other hand, if you go to Kibune Shrine from Kurama-dera Temple, you'll have to go all the way downhill, so I thought that would be quite damaging to my legs. If you are going, we recommend sneakers.
