Journey to Fukuanji Temple, the Land of Fulfilling Wishes

Fukuanji Temple, located in Nakanoji-cho, Tanabe City, Wakayama Prefecture, is an ancient temple. Its name derives from the meaning of granting one's wish, and it is also called 'Ichiganji Temple.' The quiet atmosphere and the history colored by legends make this temple attractive.

The precincts colored by the story of Antoku and Kiyohime

As you enter the precincts, the first thing that catches your eye is the 'Antoku and Kiyohime scroll' painted on the stairs. This scroll depicts an interesting story starting with Kiyohime's upbringing, which entertains the visitors.

Paying homage to the Jizo Bodhisattva granting one's wish

The Jizo Bodhisattva enshrined in the main hall is believed to grant one's wish. Visitors offer sake and red pepper to the Jizo Bodhisattva with their heartfelt wishes. Sake can be purchased at the nearby shop, but in recent years, it is necessary to bring offerings from home.

Moments of listening to the flow of the river

The tranquil atmosphere of Fukuanji Temple, coupled with the sound of the flowing river, makes it feel as if time has stood still. As you walk along the approach, listening to the lively whispers of nature, you will feel as if your heart is being cleansed.

Fukuanji Temple is a wonderful place where tradition and nature blend together. When visiting as a tourist, why not take your time and savor its charm?

It is a nice temple where you can pray quietly while listening to the flowing river. It is not the legend of Anchin Kiyohime that has been handed down at Dojoji Temple, but a new theory that begins with Kiyohime's upbringing that is very interesting. The temple itself is small, so you can visit it in just 30 minutes. Added on 2024.1.10 I went back for the first time in seven months, and there was a sign in front of the gate that said that the shop that sells ``sake and chili pepper'' sets for offerings would be closed at the end of May of this year. Currently, it appears to be open only on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. Since they are not sold at temples, people now have to bring their own from home when visiting the temple. Perhaps for this reason, there is no explanatory text explaining why sake and chili peppers are offered as offerings, and sake and chili peppers were almost never offered to Ichigan Jizo. People visiting the shrine for the first time may not even know that such a custom exists. It was a shame because the customs and culture here are unique and not found elsewhere. I think it would be better if the temple sold it...

It is located in Tanabe City, Wakayama Prefecture. This is a temple located on the way to Kumano Kodo. I have been visiting this shrine since I was a child. There is also a Jizo statue who can make your wish come true. I prayed quietly with my children. It's a great way to explore Kumano Kodo. The offered alcoholic beverages are not sold in the main hall, but at the shop below. The scenery was also very nice!

His other name is Hitotoji-san. There is a Jizo statue. The goshuin is written down, but it seems to change depending on the season. You can buy hand-me-down sake for 100 yen.
