Mashikida Shrine is the Ichinomiya of Owari Province, located in a paddy field area nourished by the pure water of the Kiso River. Its name derives from this "true (ます) clear (すみ) paddy field (だ)". The pastoral landscape nurtured by the blessings of the Kiso River still adorns the serenity and appearance of the precincts.
During the Heian period, it received reverence from the state, and during the Kamakura period, there were dedications of Bugaku masks from Emperor Juntoku. Designated as important cultural properties, the Bugaku masks still emit the fragrance of performing arts within the precincts.
The precincts are also known as a famous spot for cherry blossoms and autumn leaves. During the spring peach blossom festival, the full bloom of cherry blossoms fills the air with the message of flowers. From the summer greenery, to the autumn colors, and the winter snowscape, it is a place where one can experience the changing of the seasons throughout the year.
The Goshuin is carefully handwritten, and the sacred water is bestowed upon payment of the first-fruit offering at the shrine office. The shrine's hospitality, which treasures each visitor, truly embodies the dignity befitting the Ichinomiya of Owari Province.
Mashikida Shrine is an important place deeply rooted in the history and natural surroundings of Owari, providing visitors with continued tranquility and new encounters.
