Yohara Shrine is a historic shrine quietly nestled in Numazu City, Shizuoka Prefecture. Listed in the Engishiki, this shrine has a long history and continues to be loved by the local people. The modern concrete shrine building retains a sacred atmosphere that has remained unchanged since ancient times.
Within the shrine grounds, Hikan cherry blossoms bloom during the New Year, their pale pink flowers comforting visitors even in the cold of winter. The changing scenery each season reveals a beautiful harmony between nature and the shrine.
Yohara Shrine is known for being very accessible to local residents. It offers free amazake from New Year’s Eve to New Year's Day, and omikuji are available at a reasonable price of 100 yen. Additionally, the adjoining free parking lot is a significant advantage for visitors.
The fact that 60% of the shrine grounds are dedicated to parking is a humorous symbol of the shrine's adaptation to modern society. It seems even the gods might be saying, “Visitor convenience comes first.”
Unfortunately, Yohara Shrine is not yet fully barrier-free, making it difficult to explore all parts of the shrine grounds. This is an area where future improvements are expected.
Yohara Shrine continues to exist in harmony with modern life while boasting a long history. Its tranquil presence, filled with the beauty of the seasons and local residents' affections, makes it a hidden gem of Shizuoka. It’s recommended not only for history enthusiasts but also for those looking to spend a quiet time. Why not experience this special place at least once?
