Place of worship • 2740 Shirahama, Shimoda, Shizuoka 415-0012, Japan
Located at the southern tip of the Izu Peninsula, Ikonahime Shrine (commonly known as Shirahama Shrine) stands on Shirahama Beach and is known as the oldest shrine in the Izu region. Its founding date is unknown, but the history is said to span over 2400 years. Let's delve into the charm of this shrine that continues to attract many visitors over its long history.
As you step into the precincts, the first thing that catches your eye is a gigantic sacred tree said to be over 2000 years old. This tree, known as “Yakushi's Kashimaki,” warmly welcomes visitors. Its overwhelming presence seems to tell the long history of the shrine.
Even more surprising is the existence of a sacred tree said to have existed for about 1300 years even after withering. Losing life, yet maintaining its form for over a thousand years, these sacred trees emphasize the shrine's mystical atmosphere.
The charm of Shirahama Shrine is not limited to the precincts. The red torii gate standing on Shirahama Beach, in contrast with the blue sea, is famous as a stunning scenic spot. Many tourists visit to witness this beautiful landscape.
The torii gate, built as if protruding into the sea, is sometimes washed by waves. This sight, where nature's strength and the shrine's mysticism blend, is truly worthy of being called a magnificent view. On windy days, the pathway around the torii might get soaked, so caution is advised.
When worshiping, it's correct to first pay respects at the red torii by the seaside and then proceed to the main hall. Many people tend to go directly to the main hall from the parking lot, but by following this order, you'll have a deeper worship experience.
Goshuin collectors will be pleased to find five types of goshuin available at Shirahama Shrine, including unique ones featuring a dragon painting. Why not get one as a memento of your visit?
Ikonahime Shrine is a special place where history, nature, and mystery are harmoniously integrated. When visiting Izu, be sure to visit this wonderful power spot for a special experience that will cleanse your soul.
