Located in Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto, the Chishakuin Treasure Hall is a treasure trove of Japan's representative wall paintings. This small treasure hall houses many masterpieces by the Hasegawa School, which colored the Momoyama period.
In the newly reconstructed exhibition room, you can admire the details of wall paintings up close. Through low-reflective glass, you can fully enjoy the cherry blossoms' lustrous colors created by gofun and the brilliant shine of the luxurious gold and silver powder. Sitting on the sofa in the center, you can immerse yourself in the world of the artworks as if you have entered the paintings.
In the famous garden of Chishakuin, exquisitely detailed replicas of authentic fusuma paintings are displayed. After taking a leisurely stroll around the garden and enjoying the colorful replica paintings, a visit to the treasure hall will once again fill you with awe at the genuine artworks. If you have extra time, it is recommended to first watch the video introducing the history of Chishakuin, which is screened inside the hall.
The works of the Hasegawa School represent the essence of the Momoyama culture and are among the national treasures. In the treasure hall, efforts are made to preserve these works under appropriate temperature and humidity control for the inheritance by future generations. The 500 yen entrance fee is a small contribution to connect these great works of art to the future.
When visiting Chishakuin, please keep in mind to appreciate the artworks in the treasure hall. Don't miss this excellent opportunity to encounter the magnificent treasures that have adorned Kyoto's culture.
