Walking along the narrow path in Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto, you will come across a quietly standing small temple, Funda-in. This little temple encapsulates the history and culture of Japan.
It is said that Sesshu, the master painter, designed the garden at Funda-in. The arrangement of stones and the moss-covered rocks are said to vividly depict the figure of a meditating monk. The garden exudes an atmosphere as if Sesshu's ink painting is transposed into the garden.
A modest tea room stands next to the main hall. This tea room, with its historical significance as a sub-temple of Tofuku-ji, exudes an old-fashioned charm. As the creation of a tea master who cherishes the heart of the tea ceremony, the refined taste of wabi-sabi emanating from the interior is exceptional.
The approach is lined with moss-covered stepping stones. Enveloped in tranquil air, with each step, the hustle and bustle of the city recedes further away. Passing through the temple gate, the gentle scent of incense in the air will soothe the heart. Funda-in may not have any major attractions, but its quiet presence seems to embody the charm of Kyoto. It may be nice to take a leisurely break while contemplating the history and culture.
