Located just off the Shimoda street, the 'Ama Hut' is a small hidden shop run by a local fisherman's family. It has only a faint sign, almost making you pass by, but here you will find the taste of the sea in Shimoda.
The Ama Hut's menu features freshly caught seafood of the day. The simmered kinmedai (splendid alfonsino) is exquisite, and the savory sauce that goes well with white rice will delight your taste buds. The large sazae (horned turban) tempura offers a satisfying crunch. Depending on the season, you may also have a chance to taste extra-large abalone and premium ise-ebi (spiny lobster).
The interior has a rustic atmosphere, which, in turn, creates a peaceful space. You will feel as if you were invited into the home of an old fisherman. The slightly dusty appearance seems to tell the story of its long history.
When you visit Shimoda, be sure to explore this hidden gem surrounded by the blessings of the sea. The fresh seafood and the flavors of the fisherman's family will surely leave you with wonderful memories.
