Exploring the ancient Buddhist remains - The charm of the Tō-in-ji Temple Ruins
On a small hill in Asuka Village, Nara Prefecture, the remains of an ancient temple that has continued since the Asuka period are spread out. That is the Tō-in-ji Temple Ruins. It is said to be one of the seven temples related to Prince Shōtoku, and excavation surveys have confirmed the remains that tell of the former grandeur, such as the foundation stones of the pagoda and fragments of Buddhist statues.
Although the site is small, the flattened mountain top still retains the features of the Buddhist remains. As you imagine among the rubble, you can visualize the residence of Kameyama-dono, the dining hall, and the footsteps of the monks’ lives. It seems like an entrance to a world that transcends time and space.
You can access the Tō-in-ji Temple Ruins by car, but it is also recommended to visit on foot. Asuka Village still preserves small paths with an ancient atmosphere, where you can enjoy strolling while visiting historical sites. It is not far from Nara Park, and the convenient location makes it attractive for elderly people to visit without any hassle.
Reflecting on history and slowly feeling the ancient atmosphere. That is the charm of the Tō-in-ji Temple Ruins. When you visit Nara, why not take a leisurely stroll here.
